Starting physical therapy can feel like a big step, especially if it's been a while since you felt comfortable moving. Here's what happens at a first home visit with Five Dock Physiotherapy, so there are no surprises.

Before your therapist arrives

  • Clear a small space. About the size of a yoga mat is enough, plus a sturdy chair without wheels.
  • Dress for movement. Comfortable clothes, and supportive shoes you normally wear.
  • Gather your paperwork. A medication list, any surgical protocol or hospital discharge papers, and your insurance card if you're using insurance.
  • Have a photo ID ready. It's needed for the 65+ free sessions.
  • Invite a helper if you like. A family member or caregiver is welcome to join.

When your therapist arrives

Your therapist will introduce themselves and show identification. If anything seems unusual, you can call us at (833) 386-9231 before opening the door.

The evaluation

The first visit focuses on understanding you. Your therapist will typically:

  • Ask about your health history, your symptoms, and what's become harder to do.
  • Talk about your goals, such as walking to the mailbox, managing the stairs or getting back to golf.
  • Check movement, strength, flexibility, balance and walking.
  • Watch how you do key tasks around your home, like getting up from a chair or climbing stairs.

Starting treatment

Most first visits include some treatment, such as gentle hands-on techniques or a few starter exercises. Your therapist will explain each step and check how you feel. You can always ask to stop or slow down.

What you'll leave with

  • A clear explanation of what your therapist found.
  • A short, written home exercise plan.
  • Any quick home-safety suggestions.
  • A suggested schedule and a time for your next visit.

Questions to ask

  • What do you think is causing my symptoms?
  • What can I realistically expect, and over what time frame?
  • Which activities should I avoid, and which should I keep doing?
  • What should I do if my symptoms get worse between visits?
