How in-home physical therapy can help

Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults in the United States, according to the CDC. Many falls are linked to things physical therapy can address, like leg strength, balance and walking.

Because your therapist works in your home, they can also spot hazards you've stopped noticing: loose rugs, dim hallways, a bathroom with nothing to hold on to.

  • Balance exercises matched to your current level
  • Leg and hip strengthening for steadier walking
  • Practice getting up safely after a fall
  • Advice on walking aids, footwear and home layout
  • A short daily routine you can do safely on your own

What a 45-minute session may include

  • Standard balance and walking assessments
  • Guided balance and strength exercises
  • A walk-through of your home for trip hazards
  • Practice on your own stairs, steps and floors

Who this is for: Older adults who feel unsteady, have fallen or nearly fallen, are worried about falling, or have started avoiding activities because of it.

Every plan is based on an individual evaluation by a licensed physical therapist. Results vary from person to person, and physical therapy isn't right for every condition.

Questions about balance & fall prevention

I'm worried about falling during exercises. Is it safe?

Your therapist stays beside you and picks exercises that are safe for your current balance, often next to a counter or sturdy chair, then progresses gradually.

Can you suggest changes to my home?

Yes. Your therapist can recommend simple changes such as removing loose rugs, improving lighting or adding grab bars. Any installation would be arranged separately.

Ready for a session at home?

Tell us what's going on and where you live. A care coordinator will call to match you with a licensed physical therapist and confirm a time.
